20 September will mark the end of the celebrations of the 25th anniversary of ITQB NOVA.

A commemorative session at the Rectorate of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa will close the cycle of lectures "Science and Challenges for the Future", with a seminar by Professor Kurt Wüthrich, Nobel Chemistry Laureate (2002), known for developing nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) methods for studying biological macromolecules.

In these celebrations, we pay tribute to Prof. António V. Xavier and Prof. Carlos Portas, both deeply involved in the foundation of this institute.

The origins of ITQB NOVA go back to 1986, when the Centro de Tecnologia Química e Biológica - CTQB - was created by a joint dispatch from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and the Ministry of Education and Culture.   The new centre took shape through a process led by António V. Xavier (1943-2006), Professor of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, and Carlos Portas, President of INIA (Instituto Nacional de Investigação Agrária) at the time. In 1993, this research centre became part of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, changing its name to Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica.

Since its foundation, and to the present date, ITQB NOVA is one of the leading Portuguese research and Education institutes in its area. The Institution continues the route paved by its founders, fostering excellent research and training the next generations.
