Cecília Arraiano is the first woman to preside over the European Academy of Microbiology

Cecília Arraiano will succeed Kenneth Timmis, president since 2025, and will take office on January 1, 2026. “It will be a three-year challenge. The Academy brings together researchers of outstanding quality, and I will also do my best” says Cecília, who currently leads the Gene Expression Control Laboratory at the Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier of NOVA University Lisbon (ITQB NOVA), in Oeiras, Portugal.
Over the years, she has received numerous distinctions highlighting the quality of her research: she is an elected member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO); she served for eleven years on the Executive Committee of the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS), receiving the FEBS “Diplôme D’Honneur”; she is a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, being the first in Portugal to receive this distinction; she was ambassador in Portugal for the American Society for Microbiology; she was President of the Portuguese Society of Genetics, and has been a corresponding member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences since 2009, among others.
The European Academy of Microbiology brings together a select group of researchers within the Federation of European Microbiological Societies, with the aim of promoting and recognizing excellence in microbiology throughout Europe. To join this Academy, a researcher must be nominated by one member and supported by four others. After the nomination, an election process takes place to define the final list of members. Cecília Arraiano joined the European Academy of Microbiology in 2016. She was the second Portuguese member to join this prestigious group, and the first Portuguese woman to do so.
“I am very pleased: this is an important step for gender issues in science, as I am the first woman leading this Academy. It is also an important step for Portugal, as this nomination highlights our world-class science”, Cecília adds.
“The appointment of Dr. Cecília Arraiano reflects the international recognition of the high-quality work carried out by Portuguese researchers—in this particular case, by Cecília—and the institutional effort to support these researchers, even with the well-known difficulties in accessing funding”, adds João Crespo, Director of ITQB NOVA.

Cecília Maria Arraiano, Investigadora Coordenadora no ITQB NOVA, é anunciada como a nova Presidente da Academia Europeia de Microbiologia. É assim a primeira mulher, bem como a primeira pessoa do sul da Europa, a presidir a Academia, 16 anos após a sua fundação.
Cecília Arraiano sucederá a Kenneth Timmis, presidente desde 2025, e iniciará funções a 1 de janeiro de 2026. “Vai ser um desafio durante três anos. A Academia integra investigadores de muita qualidade e eu também vou dar o meu melhor”, diz Cecília, que lidera atualmente o Laboratório de Controlo da Expressão Génica no Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (ITQB NOVA), em Oeiras.
Ao longo dos anos, tem recebido numerosas distinções que destacam a qualidade da sua investigação: é membro eleito da Organização Europeia de Biologia Molecular (EMBO); esteve onze anos no Comité Executivo da Federação Europeia de Bioquímica (FEBS) recebendo o “Diplôme D´Honneur” da FEBS; é Fellow da Academia Americana de Microbiologia, tendo sido a primeira em Portugal a receber esta distinção; foi embaixadora, em Portugal, da Sociedade Americana de Microbiologia; foi Presidente da Sociedade Portuguesa de Genética, e é membro correspondente da Academia das Ciências de Lisboa desde 2009, entre outras.
A Academia Europeia de Microbiologia reúne um conjunto restrito de investigadores dentro da Federação Europeia de Sociedades de Microbiologia, com o intuito de promover e reconhecer a excelência em microbiologia em toda a Europa. Para integrar esta Academia, um investigador deve ser nomeado por um dos membros e apoiado por outros quatro membros. Após a nomeação, decorre ainda um processo de eleição que define a lista final de membros a integrar. Cecília Arraiano juntou-se à Academia Europeia de Microbiologia em 2016. Foi o segundo membro português a juntar-se a este prestigiado grupo, e foi a primeira mulher portuguesa a fazê-lo.
“Estou muito satisfeita porque este é um passo importante para Portugal, para a nossa Academia das Ciências, para a Sociedade Portuguesa de Microbiologia, para a Universidade NOVA de Lisboa e, claro, para o ITQB NOVA. Será bom que mais distinções e lideranças internacionais venham para Portugal”, acrescenta Cecília.
“A nomeação da Doutora Cecília Arraiano reflete o reconhecimento internacional do trabalho de qualidade que tem sido desenvolvido pelos investigadores Portugueses, neste caso particular da Cecília, e do esforço institucional em apoiar estes investigadores mesmo com as dificuldades de acesso a financiamento conhecidas”, acrescenta João Crespo, Diretor do ITQB NOVA.
