The workshop brought together professionals from all over the country to ITQB NOVA to discuss plant science and its role in global challenges.

Oeiras, 12th May 2025

Organized by Concessus in a partnership between ITQB NOVA and ARALAB, the workshop on plant research to support "One Health"  took place on 11th April 2025. Around 100 experts in the fields of biotechnology, microbiology and genetics from all over the country gathered at the institute to explore the importance of plants in the context of “One Health”.

The “One Health” concept considers a collaborative, multisectoral and transdisciplinary approach that recognizes the interconnection between human, animal and environmental health. This perspective recognizes that the well-being of people, animals and ecosystems is interdependent and requires coordinated efforts to tackle global health challenges.

The workshop featured several presentations from different areas, from biodiversity, germplasm conservation and interactions between organisms, to breeding and biotechnological applications.

The event ended with a round table that brought together journalists, scientists, primary and secondary school teachers, innovation offices and local/regional authorities. Among the topics discussed were the gap in plant education in current school curricula, the importance of groups linking science to different sectors of the community, as well as the need for greater public education and awareness for the conservation of our biological resources.
