Invited Professor wins American Society for Microbiology Award

Gustavo Henrique Goldman, invited Professor at ITQB NOVA, was chosen as the 2021 ASM Moselio Schaechter awardee, for being an example in leadership and commitment in the field of Microbiology

Every year the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) attributes the Moselio Schaechter Award in recognition of a developing-country professional in the field of Microbiology. Created and named in honor of a former ASM President, the award aims to bring focus to scientists with distinguished research achievements and a record of innovation and advancement of the clinical microbiology profession.

To be considered as candidate individuals from upper-middle, lower-middle and low-income countries must have shown to be instrumental in setting up clinical microbiology laboratories and biotechnology services, be academicians who developed high-quality training programs or even researchers who demonstrated leadership in the context of the region.

This last category is the case of Gustavo Henrique Goldman, invited Professor at ITQB NOVA:

"I feel very honored to accept this award. I hope it can serve as a stimulus to young Microbiologists to do their best and try to reach all their goals in their careers. Science is really fun but it is also very difficult. Without creativity, discipline and an open mind it is impossible to be a good scientist. But if one works hard, they can have a lot of fun. This award recognizes it."

Besides a large experience in Genetics - with emphasis on Molecular Genetics of fungi - Gustavo works mainly on the topics of signal transduction in the human pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus, the characterization of carbon catabolite repression and in the activation of the CreA transcription factor in Aspergillus nidulans. He is also Chief Editor of the journals "Frontiers in Fungal Biology” and Associate Editor for “mBio”, "Fungal Genetics and Biology" and "Fungal Biology”.

More about Gustavo Goldman: born in Brazil, where he obtained a Bachelor's degree in Biology from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1983) and a Master's degree in Microbiology from the University of São Paulo (1988). After concluding a PhD in Molecular Biology at the University of Gent, in Belgium, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, USA. Currently he is a Full Professor at Faculdade de Ciências Farmacêuticas de Ribeirão Preto (University of São Paulo) and visiting Professor at ITQB NOVA and Escola de Saúde (University of Minho), as well as adjunct Professor of the Center for Latin America Studies in Vanderbilt University, USA, and former Fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation (2007).
