ITQB NOVA recebe 3ª e última eliminatória das Olimpíadas Portuguesas de Biologia

Ainda não eram 8h30 e já chegava o autocarro com os 44 estudantes que alcançaram a terceira e última eliminatória das Olimpíadas Portuguesas de Biologia. De todo o país, estes jovens do 11º e 12º anos de escolaridade distinguiram-se ao longo dos últimos meses em eliminatórias consecutivas, com a sua paixão pela Biologia e o seu empenho.

Acompanhados por uma equipa de investigadores e voluntários, os estudantes passaram a manhã entre o ITQB NOVA e o INIAV, realizando três provas práticas e uma teórico-prática, nas áreas da bioquímica, bioinformática, entomologia e biologia molecular.

“Para além das provas práticas laboratoriais e teórico-práticas, os estudantes tiveram a oportunidade de participar em atividades culturais e científicas que promoveram o intercâmbio de ideias e experiências. Estas iniciativas tiveram como objetivos estimular o interesse pela Biologia e fomentar relações de amizade entre jovens de diferentes regiões do país”, destacou Pedro Oliveira, da Ordem dos Biólogos.       

Os vencedores, que vão ser conhecidos a 18 de maio numa cerimónia no Pavilhão do Conhecimento – Ciência Viva, vão representar Portugal nas Olimpíadas Ibero-americanas de Biologia e nas Olimpíadas Internacionais de Biologia.

As Olimpíadas Portuguesas de Biologia são um concurso sobre Biologia destinado a estudantes do ensino básico e secundário. Desde 2010 que são realizadas em Portugal pela Ordem dos Biólogos, em colaboração com a Ciência Viva e em parceria com o Município de Oeiras e diversas instituições científicas, como o ITQB NOVA.

ITQB NOVA hosts 3rd and final round of Portuguese Biology Olympiad

This Saturday, May 10^th, ITQB NOVA hosted another edition of the 3^rd and final round of the Portuguese Biology Olympiads, together with INIAV. The winners will be announced on May 18^th at Pavilhão do Conhecimento - Ciência Viva.

Before 8:30 a.m., a bus arrived at ITQB NOVA carrying the 44 high school students who made it to this final stage of the competition. Coming from across the country, these 11^th and 12^th graders stood out over the past few months in a series of qualifying rounds, thanks to their passion for biology and strong dedication.

Guided by a team of researchers and volunteers, the students spent the morning between ITQB NOVA and INIAV, where they took part in three practical lab tests and one combined theoretical and practical exam covering biochemistry, bioinformatics, entomology and molecular biology. 

“In addition to the lab-based and theoretical-practical exams, the students had the chance to join cultural and scientific activities designed to encourage the exchange of ideas and experiences. These initiatives aim to spark greater interest in biology and help build friendships among students from different parts of the country”, said Pedro Oliveira from Ordem dos Biólogos.

The winners, to be announced on May 18^th, during the ceremony at the Pavilhão do Conhecimento – Ciência Viva, will go on to represent Portugal at the Ibero-American and the International Biology Olympiads.

The Portuguese Biology Olympiad is a national competition aimed at middle and high school students. Since 2010, it has been organized by Ordem dos Biólogos in collaboration with Ciência Viva and in partnership with the Municipality of Oeiras and several scientific institutions, including ITQB NOVA.
