ITQB NOVA researcher Catarina Paquete elected to ISMET board

The International Society for Microbial Electrochemistry and Technology links researchers from various areas of science and engineering to study interactions between electroactive organisms and electrodes.

ITQB NOVA researcher Catarina M. Paquete was elected as one of the new three board members of the International Society for Microbial Electrochemistry and Technology (ISMET).

The new board members were announced on the 7th International Meeting of ISMET, which took place in Okinawa, Japan, from 7-11 October.

ISMET is dedicated to link researchers from various areas of science and engineering to study interactions between electroactive organisms and electrodes, with the goal of finding novel ways to develop sustainable applications.

Paquete is an Assistant researcher at the Inorganic Biochemistry and NMR group, led by Ricardo O. Louro. She is interested in the study of the extracellular electron transfer processes performed by electroactive organisms. By exploring the extracellular electron transfer processes in living organisms, she wants to understand the molecular factors important to improve electron transfer. This knowledge is crucial to advance the practical implementation of bioelectrochemical systems, for sustainable energy production coupled with wastewater treatment.

The other ISMET Board Members elected along with Paquete are Jeffrey Gralnick, representing North America, and Akihiro Okamoto, representing Asia-Pacific.
