Joint Project between ITQB NOVA, iBET and CENIMAT-FCT-NOVA wins Santander-NOVA Prize

ITQB/iBET's Vanessa Pereira is part of the distinguished research team

A project in collaboration between CENIMAT-FCT-NOVA and ITQB/iBET researchers has won the Santander-NOVA Prize. Vanessa Pereira, from ITQB/iBET, and Ana Pimentel, from CENIMAT-FCT-NOVA, were distinguished with the 25 000€ prize, attributed within the Exact Sciences and Engineering research areas.

The project will focus on the development of nanomaterials synthesized by microwave-assisted irradiation that will be used to produce photocatalytic membranes that can be activated by solar radiation. The treatment process will be tested for the degradation of pharmaceutical contaminants such as antibiotics. The target contaminants have extremely different chemical structures and thus, if the proposed treatment is effective, it will be a promising treatment alternative to a multitude of water contaminants.

The prize was attributed this morning, September 18, during the celebration of the NOVA Science Day. Mariana Pinho, ITQB PI who now holds her second European Research Council Grant, also takes part on the NOVA Science Day, giving a talk on the research developed within the grant.
