ITQB project in the Nutrition Awards

Research on wild blackberries receives honorable mention

The project “Portuguese wild blackberries: a promise as functional food for the brain”, by ITQB researchers Lucélia Tavares, Cláudia Nunes dos Santos e Ricardo Boavida Ferreira from the Disease and Stress Biology lab, received a Nutrition Awards honorable mention  during a ceremony held this week at Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, in Lisbon. These awards, now in their third edition, aim to recognize research projects and other initiatives promoting healthy eating habits.

ITQB’s project was distinguished in the category “Research and Development” and described previous research showing that Portuguese wild blackberries are better sources of many compounds, including antioxidants, than commercially available varieties. Distinguished in the same category with the first honorable mention was a project by IBET "Bravo de Esmolfe – An apple with a beneficial effect in cardiovascular health”  by Ana Teresa Serra, Ana Matias, Rosário Bronze and Catarina Duarte from Nutraceuticals and Delivery Lab. The first prize in this category was awarded to a project by Instituto Nacional de Saúde Doutor Ricardo Jorge. Eighty projects were submitted in all the five categories.
