Prizes awarded at EUROBIC 8

The 8th European Biological Inorganic Chemistry Conference

Oeiras, 10/07/06

The 8th European Biological Inorganic Chemistry Conference (EUROBIC 8) was held from July 2 to July 6 at Aveiro and more than 400 participants from all over Europe were present.

Prizes were attributed for the best posters and Ana Raquel Correia, PhD student in the Protein Biochemistry, Folding & Stability Laboratory, won the second prize with her poster communication "Structural and functional implications of clinical point mutations in frataxin, a putative iron chaperon involved in the neurodegenerative disorder Freidreich ataxia" (authors: Ana R. Correia, Salvatore Adinolfi, Annalisa Pastore, Claudio M. Gomes)

The EUROBIC 8 conference was also the occasion to pay a posthumous tribute to Prof. António Xavier. The 2006 EUROBIC Medal was awarded to Prof. António Xavier, one of the founders of ITQB. The Eurobic Medal is a very prestigious international distinction in the field of Biochemistry and is attributed every two years to outstanding researchers in the field of Bioinorganic Chemistry. Prof. António Xavier, author of more than 220 scientific papers and distinguished with many prizes and awards over the years, was, once more, recognized for his significant contributions to the study of metalloproteins.
