Summer Science @ ITQB NOVA welcomed 27 university students
Oeiras, 29th July 2025
Coming from Lisbon, Setúbal, Leiria, and even Coimbra, 27 undergraduate students had the opportunity to interact with researchers at various career stages, students, and staff, gaining insight into what it’s like to work and do research at the Institute. From exploring protein design to investigating bacterial cell division, the students dedicated 27 hours to hands-on lab work across 12 research laboratories. “I learned to be a little more confident in the work I was doing because making mistakes is normal", shared one of the participants, reflecting on the experience.
They also attended a dedicated session on our Master’s programmes – Biochemistry for Health, Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, Medical Microbiology, Plant Biology for Sustainable Agriculture and Science Communication -, featuring coordinators, current students, and alumni, as well as a session on presentation skills.
But the week was not all lab coats, pipettes and computers – students also enjoyed a sailing baptism. “It was amazing – from the environment to the activities,” said another participant.
To wrap up, students presented the results of their lab projects to peers and the ITQB NOVA community, sharing what they had discovered and learned.
This annual programme, supported by the Oeiras Municipality and iBET, is open to bachelor’s students interested in biomolecular sciences, life sciences, biotechnology, computational biology, and related areas.
