25 years of ITQB NOVA
The history of ITQB NOVA was celebrated last Friday with a full house at the Auditorium of the Rectorate of Universidade NOVA.
The celebrations started with interventions of José Fragata, Vice-Rector of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa; Mónia Bettencourt-Dias, Director of IGC, and Luís Vieira, the Secretary of State of Agriculture and Food.
During the session, we also remembered and paid tribute, posthumously, to Professor António Xavier, founder of ITQB NOVA, remembering his fundamental role in the foundation of this institute and in Science in Portugal. Professor Carlos Portas was also awarded the Medal of Merit of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa for his fundamental role in the foundation of ITQB NOVA.

Finally, the Antonio Xavier prize, instituted by BRUKER, distinguished this year the scientific career of Helena Santos, full Professor of ITQB NOVA, in recognition of her contribute to the Portuguese scientific development.
Kurt Wüthrich, Chemistry Nobel Prize laureate in 2002, gave a seminar, in which he asked young researchers in the room to "have as much fun as he had studying this field of Nuclear Magnetic Ressonance" and remembered to all that "Research needs a bold and invigorating frame of mind which may be uncomfortable to others".
Cláudio M. Soares, Director of ITQB NOVA, and Manuel Heitor, Minister of Science and Technology, closed the commemorations looking to the future: Cláudio M. Soares called up "the students to be the future and the path to the immortality of ITQB NOVA" and Manuel Heitor finished saying "The last 25 years built the foundations for the development of research and education over the next decades."
