Title: Time travel – how tree rings contribute to the study of climate change

Speaker: Sofia Leal

From: Forest Biotechnology Lab, ITQB

Abstract:

You will be introduced to the fascinating world of dendrochronology, i.e. tree ring dating (from greek: ‘dendron’ = tree, ‘khronos’ = time, ‘logia’ = study), and to its multiple applications to the study of past events, in particular to climatology. The lecture will cover introductory aspects of the history of the Earth’s climate; the methods used to study past climate dynamics and to understand the present global warming conditions; and the role of tree ring research under the context of paleoclimatology.
