Laboratório Associado LS4Future

Coordinated by ITQB NOVA, the Associate Laboratory Life Sciences for a Healthy and Sustainable Future (LS4FUTURE), is a unique infrastructure in Portugal dedicated to the study of Life Sciences, at different levels of complexity through fundamental, applied, and translational research.

ITQB NOVA was first awarded the Associate Laboratory (LA) status in 2001, and it was renewed in 2021 through LS4FUTURE, supported by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia.

ITQB NOVA engages in a wide range of partnerships that drive innovation and scientific development. Some of these collaborations include:

EUTOPIA – European Universities Transforming to an Open Inclusive Academy – is an alliance of ten European Universities that share common values and agendas, and work together to create a large, diverse, and inclusive community. Focusing on pedagogical excellence, collaborative research, and shared innovation, EUTOPIA aims to address local, regional, and global challenges, contributing to a new model of higher education in Europe. NOVA has been a member of EUTOPIA since 2021.

The InnovPlantProtect Collaborative Laboratory (CoLAB) is a private non-profit association promoted by Universidade NOVA de Lisboa and led by ITQB NOVA’s GREEN-IT research unit. Focused on Mediterranean crops, it brings together academia, research institutes, public bodies, companies, and producer associations to develop effective responses to emerging pests and diseases intensified by climate change.

The longstanding ITQB NOVA association with Instituto de Biologia Experimental e Tecnológica (IBET) enables an interface between fundamental research and industrial applications.

The Oeiras Life Science Campus will be developed at Quinta do Marquês in Oeiras, ITQB NOVA’s current location, with the mission of boosting Science and Innovation in a One-Health perspective. It will be the first “One-Health” Campus in Portugal and one of the largest Life Sciences campuses in Europe, bringing ITQB NOVA together with iBET, NIMSB, and CBR.

ITQB NOVA is one of the 17 Nodes of the Portuguese Platform of BioImage (PPBI). PPBI is a common functional Platform dedicated to promoting technical integration and centralized management of shared resources in bioimaging. Organized as a consortium of “nodes”, housed in top Research Universities and Institutes in Portugal, its services focus on advanced microscopy and processing/analysis of images in the life-sciences, from cell & developmental biology, neurosciences, oncobiology, immunology, infection and regenerative medicine.

ITQB NOVA is one of the nodes of the Portuguese NMR network, hosting the largest Portuguese NMR facility – Centro de Ressonância Magnética António Xavier. This network is part of the national roadmap for research infrastructures and aims to provide the scientific community with access to modern and up-to-date NMR spectrometers, housed in scientific institutions with competence and scientific expertise on the use of this type of equipment.

ITQB NOVA is one of the nine Portuguese Academic Institutions that integrates RNEM (Rede Nacional de Espectrometria de Massa). This network is a distributed nation-wide infrastructure, included in the national roadmap and provides state-of-art scientific expertise, advanced technology, training and services in the area of mass spectrometry and proteomics since 2006.
