Hermínia de Lencastre elected for Academia das Ciências

The election recognizes the scientific reputation of the ITQB NOVA's PI and Professor

Hermínia de Lencastre, head of the Molecular Genetics lab and Full Professor at at ITQB NOVA, and also Senior Research Associate at The Rockefeller Universitywas elected foreign Corresponding Member of Academia das Ciências de Lisboa, in the Class of Sciences.

The researcher started her journey at ITQB NOVA in 1989. Lencastre's work focuses on microbial genetics, particularly on biochemistry and molecular biology of Gram-Positive bacteria and phages, including mechanisms of antibiotic resistance and spread of resistance genes and clones. The election, which took place on March 12th, at the Effective Member's Plenary Session, recognizes the quality of the Professor's contributions for the benefit of cultural and scientific development in Portugal and around the world. "I am deeply honoured to be a member of the Academy, alongside so many  researchers I admire", says Hermínia de Lencastre.

The purpose of the academy is to promote and encourage scientific research, to collaborate in education and teaching activities and to contribute, through research, cultural extension and the discussion of ideas, to the valorization of the Portuguese people"Having Professor Hermínia de Lencastre elected for one of the most prestigious scientific institutions in Portugal is a true recognition her work. Hermínia de Lencastre is also a member of the American Society for Microbiology, the Society of General Microbiology, the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, the Portuguese Society for Microbiology and the Portuguese Society for Biochemistry.
