5 years of 90 Segundos de Ciência

ITQB NOVA and NOVA FCSH radio programme has been disseminating research projects across multiple fields for half a decade

This week, the radio programme 90 Segundos de Ciência celebrates 5 years of existence. This NOVA FSCH and ITQB NOVA initiative, which airs on Antena 1, premiered in 2016, and has 1200 episodes portraying Portuguese science.

The programme is a spin-off of the NOVA Master in Science Communication, and gives voice to researchers all over the country, spanning all scientific fields, as well as to Portuguese scientists abroad. According to co-coordinator Ana Sanchez, “it has provided over a thousand researchers the opportunity to bring their projects to the public eye and show that we have important, meaningful and impactful science happening here and now”.

With the support from NOVARTIS, 90 Segundos de Ciência has become a digital repository of the scientific research carried out in Portugal. The programme disseminates projects in all fields – from law to natural sciences, from sports to art, from space sciences to history. “Science is not complete until it is communicated”, states António Granado from NOVA FCSH, “we hope to keep breaking down the existing barriers between science and society, while showing the versatility and diversity of scientific research”, adds Joana Lobo Antunes. Since day 1, Adriano Cerqueira, the programme producer, is the silent voice behind the stories broadcasted every weekday at 19h00, “it has been a privilege to be part of this journey in the front seat”, he says.

In 2018, 90 Segundos de Ciência was awarded Prémio Acesso Cultura, in the category Intelectual Access to culture. In the following year, it was distinguished with the Gulbenkian Knowledge Award.
