Bacterial Imaging Cluster
The Bacterial Imaging Cluster (BIC) is ITQB NOVA’s advanced fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry platform, providing state-of-the-art imaging and Fluorescence-Activated Cell Sorting (FACS) technologies to support biological research.
Beyond access to instrumentation, BIC offers comprehensive scientific and technical support throughout the entire imaging workflow. We assist researchers with experimental design, sample preparation, labeling strategies, equipment selection, image acquisition, and bioimage analysis, helping users generate high-quality, reproducible data. The platform provides hands-on training for new users, personalized support for advanced applications, and guidance in developing and optimizing imaging workflows for a wide range of biological samples and research questions.
In addition to daily user support, we organize regular courses and workshops covering both fundamental and advanced topics in fluorescence microscopy and image analysis.
BIC is a node of the Portuguese Platform of BioImaging (PPBI), the national imaging infrastructure that is part of the European research infrastructure Euro-BioImaging ERIC.

BIC is available to all ITQB NOVA researchers. Before independent use, users receive hands-on training on the relevant instrumentation and workflows to ensure safe operation and high-quality data acquisition. Equipment can then be reserved through the Agendo booking system.
