Why do we want to send a human mission to Mars? Should we? Can we? What are the biological and technological challenges of this feat? Life Sciences and Astrophysics researchers will discuss these topics at Centro Cultural de Belém between October 2018 and January 2019. By joining researchers from Instituto de Astrofísica e Ciências do Espaço and Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier the organizers want to promote a more complete understanding of the mission to Mars and to discuss what have portuguese researchers and institutions been doing in that regard. After each talk there will be astronomic observations, if the weather allows.

Marte 2030 is a cycle co organized by Instituto de Astrofísica e Ciências do Espaço IA, Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier ITQB NOVA and Centro Cultural de Belém CCB.

Program highlights

26 October 2018 - Zita Martins (Instituto Superior Técnico) and Adriano Henriques (ITQB NOVA) will discuss the search for life on Mars, what we can expect it might be and why do we need to send people and not just robots.

17 November 2018 - Rui Agostinho (IA/FCUL) and Pedro Fevereiro (ITQB NOVA) will comment on the biological and technological challenges to go on this trip - and come back.

15 December 2018 - Pedro Machado (IA/FCUL) and Isabel Abreu (ITQB NOVA) will debate how can humans survive on Mars, from producing food and need for material and energetic resources.

12 January 2019 - Nuno Santos (IA) and Ricardo Louro (ITQB NOVA) will close with what can be the beginning after coming back from Mars. Where else can we go and how? Are exoplanets the last frontier? How could we get there and how could we eventually colonize it?

MARTE 2030 will always take place on Saturdays from 21h00 to 23h00, Sala Luís de Freitas Branco, at CCB. Price for session 2,5€, price for the whole talks 8€.
