On behalf of the EU program IMpaCT and the Finnish Structural Biology community, we invite you to join us for a special seminar by Carlos Oscar Sorzano from the Instruct Centre in Madrid who will give a talk entitled "The need for validation in single particle analysis and tools".

This is a seminar of special interest to those who are doing cryoEM image processing.

 

 

Abstract:

In this talk, we will see some highlights from the following two papers. The main messages would be:

- Single Particle Analysis needs estimating many parameters in an extremely noisy environment. This makes this estimation unstable resulting in small errors around the true solution, and large errors completely away from the true solution. The second ones result in structural bias, while the first ones result in structural noise. The only way of knowing in which situation we are is by estimating the same parameters by different means and comparing the results.

- Once we have a final map, how do we know that our map is reliable? As discussed above, the estimation process can be very prone to errors due to the low Signal-to-Noise Ratio. There are many more tools to identify map pathologies beyond the gold standard FSC. We have setup a server in which all these methods are applied and an extensive report is given back to the user.
