Bacterial Pathogenesis

Coordinators
Lígia M. Saraiva
Raquel Sá-Leão

Objectives
- Understand the mode of action of the major bacterial virulence factors.
- Identify key defense and evasion mechanisms used by bacteria upon contact with the host.
- Address the problem of antibiotic resistance; identify the bacterial targets for the major classes of antibiotics, and the corresponding resistance mechanisms developed by bacteria.
- Identify bacterial pathogens associated with high mortality and morbidity, and get acquainted with their epidemiology.
- Develop the ability to search and critically interpret the scientific literature.
- Develop the ability to deliver scientific seminars.

Syllabus
1. Pathology, infection and disease.
2. Bacterial virulence factors.
3. Bacterial evasion and defenses.
4. Antibiotic resistance.
5. Methods for the identification and study of virulence factors.
6. Epidemiology of bacterial pathogens associated with high mortality and morbidity.

Evaluation
- Class participation: 30%
- Preparation and presentation of the seminar: 70%
