Virtual Electron Tomography Course

On November 23 – 26, 2020, the IMpaCT partner from Weizmann organized the Virtual Electron Tomography Course. During these 4 days, we had the pleasure to welcome lectures from several team members from the Weizmann Institute, that have shared their expertise on Electron Tomography.

In this virtual setting, we were able to welcome a total of 88 Early Career Researchers from the different partners and from different countries, as we had participants registered from 14 different counties. All participants have shared positive feedback from this event.

This online course offered basic theoretical knowledge with the aims of introducing the basics of EM involved in cryo-tomography, of providing a basic understanding of the underlying principles governing protocols for imaging, specimen preparation, and data processing, all of which will serve as a foundation for the hands-on workshop. Furthermore, this course aimed to expose the attendees to a range of scientific explorations made possible by cryo-tomography and to provide an opportunity for consortium participants to present their project goals and receive feedback from the Weizmann group without waiting for the hands-on workshop that had to be postponed due to the corona situation.

The latest promoted during an extraordinary session organized on the following Monday, November 30th, exclusively for the consortium students and researchers fully dedicated to discuss their ongoing research projects. During this extra session, the Consortium wanted to provide the Early Career Researchers (ECR) with the possibility to closely interact with the Weizmann partner team members and to take full advantage of their expertise.

A big thank you to Michael Elbaum, Sharon Wolf, their team members, and the Weizmann Conference Centre for organizing this IMpaCT Online Course. We look forward to the hands-on Workshop next year at the Weizmann Institute!

On the last day, we had a great lecture from Katya Rechav and from 4 Project Presentations by Post-docs and PhD students from Weizmann Institute, Nadav Scher, Zohar Eyal, Peter Kirchweger and Debakshi Mullick. During this session, the workshop attendees heard about research projects that applied the techniques presented in the previous 3 days of lectures, learning about, the practical issues to be considered during sample preparation and analysis.
